Stupid North Carolina love stories don’t matter.

Valentine’s day is coming up soon and thinking about it may be discouraging for some people.  For couples, Valentine’s day is a great opportunity to spend time with your spouse or significant other, but for those of us that are single, it can be miserable.  You sit on your couch under a blanket eating out of a Ben and Jerry’s pint watching a sappy love story and feeling sorry for yourself.  If that was your plan for next week, please re-think it!

Sitting there watching any Nicholas Sparks movie is just asking for trouble.  Why would you put yourself through that?  It’s miserable because you start wondering when is that going to happen for you.  How long do you have to wait before Channing Tatum comes to sweep you off your feet?  Sorry to burst your bubble, BUT IT’S NOT GOING TO HAPPEN!  Most of these big screen love stories are not possible!

Planning your wedding on Pinterest isn’t helping your case at all either.  It’s makes you want a relationship even more and it’s unhealthy.  Being in a relationship won’t make you happy.  Don’t use it to fill that hole in your heart.  There is a deeper issue and being with a boyfriend or girlfriend won’t fix it.  It will be like sticking cork in the hole of a sinking boat.  That happiness won’t last and you will be looking for a new mate…and boat to make you happy again real soon.  If you are using relationships to make you “complete” and fill this void, they are your “drug of choice” (Randy Garris).

Don’t get me wrong, I want to get married and have a family some day, but I don’t want to drown myself in North Carolina love stories that Nicholas Sparks has conjured up.  I want to wait patiently and prepare myself for the wonderful man that God has in mind for me.  In order to do this, I need to be content as a single girl and not look for a man around every corner.  For this to happen, I need to have a strong relationship with the Lord before any guy comes into my life.  “Marriage isn’t for broken people, it is for two complete people to come together and be complete with themselves and God” (Randy Garris).

You need to realize that God loves you very much and He isn’t punishing you by making you wait for the right guy or girl; He is making sure you are ready before He brings them into your life.  God loves you so much and He showed that by sending His son, Jesus to earth to die for all of your sins.  If you don’t believe me check out Hosea 2.  It tells the story of Gomer and Hosea, but the cool thing is their love story represents God’s love story with His people, the believers.  How exciting!  For those of you who thought the Bible was full of boring stories, lots of complicated words and names and crazy metaphors you can’t understand, here’s one you can.  (MIND BLOWN!)

God told Hosea he was going to marry Gomer, a harlot.  What?!?  God wants this godly man to marry a hooker?  Yep.  just wait, it’s gets better.  God is upset because He loves Gomer, but she is turning her back on Him and living her life how she pleases.  God throws some obstacles in her way to hinder how she lives.  He goes on to explain how much He loves her and cares for her.  “And now, here’s what I’m going to do: I’m going to start all over again.  I’m taking her back out into the wilderness where we had our first date, and I’ll court her.  I’ll give her bouquets of roses.” Hosea 2:14-15a (The Message).  We are Gomer in this situation.  We haven’t done anything to deserve God’s love or grace, but He still showed it to us and gave us a second chance!

If you are still struggling with wanting a relationship, I get it.  It’s hard and it’s natural for us to desire, but we need to realize what’s really important: a relationship with God over one with a guy or girl.  Society has put the notion in us since we were little throught Disney Princess movies and fairy tales that if you don’t get your happily ever after, something is wrong with you, or if we are single, we don’t mean as much or can’t be happy.  That’s not true!  There are plenty of things to be happy about and thankful for but you have to be patient and trust that God will do what He knows is best for you.
